The month of May is heavy laden with honor and respect for the souls that have served their country in the United States military. As spring searches for summer, we celebrate their service throughout National Military Appreciation Month, and reflect on their sacrifice on Memorial Day. The following article is the first in a series that will both celebrate and memorialize members of our nation's military on a national and local level.

The Pensacola Veterans Memorial Park Foundation will present its annual observance of Memorial Day on May 26 at 1 p.m. The Guest Speaker this year will be Tony Gain, a highly-decorated retired Marine Corps Colonel who completed three combat tours, instructed at some of the Marine Corps' most prestigious Leadership and Training academies, and served with the State Department.

The year 2017 has been designated as the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War. I confess 50 years is hard for me to imagine. I’m sure I’m not the only one who never thought I’d make it out of combat nor through the dark days of our first coming home. There are many Vietnam vets out there still searching for a way home from the war.

Army Sergeant Major Jesse Acosta has received notification from the VA that his benefits for a caregiver are ending in 90 days, at the end of May. The letter he received from the VA states "he is no longer appropriate for the Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers.”
